Congratulations to 8th grader Jessica Flores Lamas for winning 2nd place in the Japanese “Nengajo” (New Year’s Card) Contest, hosted by the Georgia Association of Teachers of Japanese (GATJ)! This year’s theme was the 2024 Year of the Dragon, and Jessica drew the dragon with the “Daruma” doll which represents perseverance.
Students learned how to write with Japanese calligraphy brush and ink. 6th and 7th graders practiced writing words related to the New Year, and 8th graders chose their kanji that they liked to express in the calligraphy! <6th grade 4th period> <6th grade 5th period> <7th grade 1st period> <7th grade 2nd period> <8th grade 6th period> 8th grade 7th period Thanks to the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta, Japanese students participated in the authentic cultural experience called New Year’s “mochi-tsuki,” the art of pounding rice to make mochi (rice cakes). We are also grateful to the Consulate staff Mr. Thomas and Ms. Olson, and many 6th grade parents who joined us in celebrating this event, adding a touch of community warmth to the significances of “mochi-tsuki”! <6th grade 4th period> <6th grade 5th period> <7th grade 1st period> <7th grade 2nd period> <8th grade 6th period> <8th grade 7th period> |
