6th grader Matt's father, Mr. Patterson visited 2nd period Japanese classes and shared his experience about working in Japan. Mr. Patterson is an engineer who travels to Japan on business on many occasions. He talked about his college, career, and cultural experience in Japan. Students were treated with the traditional sweets from Hiroshima, and some got the Japanese baseball team balloons! Arigatoo gozaimasu, thank you so much for coming, Patterson san! Japanese classes had special visitors on Friday! Grand tea master Ms. Aoyagi and tea masters Ms. Matsushima and Ms. Saito, who have been studying Japanese tea for years, performed tea ceremony for the students and parents. Students learned about the basics of tea ceremony, and tasted the sweets and the authentic green tea called “matcha.” Ms. Matsushima also talked to the students about the Georgia Tech Japanese program, where she teaches Japanese. She encourages students to continue learning Japanese and she wishes to meet some students in the future at GA tech. 7th grade Japanese students participated in the United Nations' World Food Day Campaign called "change the world with Onigiri (rice balls)." The students learned how to make Japan's one of the popular foods Onigiri, then sensei post photos to the campaign site to help bringing a warm school meal to a child in areas of need. |
